How to Create a Screen Capture Video Using Free Software

In this video I show how to create a screen capture video and do minor edits using completely free software. I will demonstrate:

  • How to do a screen capture video using TipCam (output is a .flv file),
  • How to convert the .flv file to .wmv using Any Video Converter (AVC),
  • How to make simple edits using Windows Movie Maker (WMM),
  • How to convert the edited .wmv file to mp4 using Any Video Converter

There are quite a few steps involved, but everything is free.

My cursor is highlighted in green, because I am showing and editing another video which has the cursor highlighted in yellow.  You will understand when you watch the video.

When I created the video, I made a mistake.  At one point about 2/3 of the way through I got up to do something.  I pushed the mic up so it was right alongside the headset and when I started up again I forgot to bring it back down.  So, the sound was muted for the last part.  I did 2 things to correct it, and have both videos below.  They are exactly the same except for the volume in the last section.  I think they both sound about the same.

In the first video I used “volume leveling” in Camtasia 7.

For the second one I split it into two sections and jacked up the audio as much as I could in the second section. Then I produced 2 mp4’s, put them back into Camtasia and produced one final mp4.

In the video I mention a couple of other videos.  They are:

Filezilla Demo (3rd Video in this post)

I also mention Windows Movie Maker.  It is no longer available.
