Google’s Chrome browser is cracking down on websites that don’t have SSL certificates in place (hereinafter known as “http” sites, as opposed to “https” sites). This started last month (January, 2017).
Right now, if your site collects any type of personal information (including emails as well as passwords or credit card information) and you don’t have an https site, visitors using a Chrome browser will receive a warning that your site is not secure.
They intend to increase the use of this warning until all http sites .will be deemed not secure. They will also be using warnings that are more and more obvious.
Firefox will be doing this, also, so now is the time to start thinking about this (time to start taking action if your site collects any type of personal information).
Google has released a video that explains (using, IMO, a lot of tech-speak) why you need to have a secure site and dispels some common myths about https. You can watch it here.
They also have an informative post on their security blog entitled “Moving Towards A More Secure Web“.
