I don’t know that there are any “requirements” per se other than being able to write well, follow instructions, meet deadlines, and know the basics of email marketing, sales pages and other formats.
I wouldn’t rely solely on “modeling existing copy” but would think it’s a requirement you also be able to write without…Read more

I Discovered The Perfect Platform For Copywriters!
So, I asked a question here last week. I had lost my LinkedIn account (no idea why), and due to my hatred of social media, I wanted to find alternatives to building a client base without using it.
John was the first to offer an answer, and his answer was far more in-depth than I expected. So…Read more

Owen, congratulations on getting your account back.
Medium can be a good medium — but I would just say that it’s not just the quality of your posts, isn’t part of success there also how effectively you drive traffic to those posts in the first place?

That’s true, David. And I feel I am usually quite good at engaging with other accounts. Medium is almost like Twitter but solely for writing, so the opportunity to engage is huge. It may require more focus than I am currently giving it, but I do feel there’s a lot of potential there.
When I was a kid I never thought I’d get to a point in life…Read more

John Carlton’s Best Ads: Butt-Ugly Golf
I've written something like 4,000 direct mail letters and direct response ads for golf products now. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. Sometimes, the best ads come from sheer desperation. I was hitting the very bottom of my bag of tricks last year,...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: Everything And The Kitchen Sink #2 – Entire Library Of Fighting Videos
There are two ads referenced in this commentary. Â This is the second one (last couple of paragraphs). Another Rodale piece-- this time, they got impatient selling individual books about the various parts of men's lives... and decided to just lump everything together...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The Financial Bloodbath Caused By Criminal Scum
Gary Halbert gets credit for the headline and concept on this one. I was working with him at the time, in the last days of the Reagan presidency, when the financial markets -- and especially the precious metals markets -- were causing investors migraines. Banks were...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The Nearly-Crippled Businessman
Here is an early self-defense letter, which struck a major nerve in the customer base for this market. It's run every year for the last decade in the major magazines and mailed even more often to hotlists. The appeal is simple and to the point: This is hard-core...
Hi Jalal,
Depending on the product, I love falling into the rabbit hole of Amazon reviews.
Also, if you know what the product is, find as many companies that sell that product and check their own reviews on sites like Trustpilot, etc.
And finally…
