Hi, All:
I just wanted to share one of my major marketing goals, and ask for feedback.
As I mentioned in my “Hello” post, I’m growing a network marketing business that Dad saw potential in and enrolled us when he was 94. The company is publicly traded (ticker LFVN).
The Compliance Department says I can’t place a direct link to the company website…Read more-
Hi Don: I’ve never done anything with Network Marketing, but I think I can be of help anyway.
First, I’m assuming that this is an actual company with a quality product. Since your father developed a multi-million dollar business in 4 years at age 94, it probably is.
You do have to segment your market between “opportunity seekers” who are…Read more

Hey all – got a great job with a cool tech/marketing company and just lost it today. Being entrepreneurial I’m hoping for some advice about how best to proceed right now while it still hurts. I spent the last year learning copywriting and marketing chops (here and elsewhere) so my tech/support skills were not 100%. That being said, how best to…Read more

First, take stock of your situation — your current resources (including money on hand, deals you could make regarding rent or other expenses, the basics of surviving above the poverty line)… your network (who you might contact for work or recommendations for work, who might know the scene well and be able to recommend actions)… and your…Read more

Hey man, Good luck! I’m in a similar situation.

Good luck to you! Keep your head up and forge full speed ahead into doing something! You’ll do fine as long as you just don’t sit back and wait for that “something” to find you!

Follow-up guys! Applied for a job more my speed (actual marketing stuff + copywriting involved 🙂 and doing a test-run tomorrow! Also, followed up a with a cool company who was in a webinar I was helping run with my last cool-tech-gig and have a new connection in the works that may lead to remote work. So… Lesson: Grab life by the horns!

John Carlton’s Best Ads: Butt-Ugly Golf
I've written something like 4,000 direct mail letters and direct response ads for golf products now. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. Sometimes, the best ads come from sheer desperation. I was hitting the very bottom of my bag of tricks last year,...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: Everything And The Kitchen Sink #2 – Entire Library Of Fighting Videos
There are two ads referenced in this commentary. This is the second one (last couple of paragraphs). Another Rodale piece-- this time, they got impatient selling individual books about the various parts of men's lives... and decided to just lump everything together...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The Financial Bloodbath Caused By Criminal Scum
Gary Halbert gets credit for the headline and concept on this one. I was working with him at the time, in the last days of the Reagan presidency, when the financial markets -- and especially the precious metals markets -- were causing investors migraines. Banks were...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The Nearly-Crippled Businessman
Here is an early self-defense letter, which struck a major nerve in the customer base for this market. It's run every year for the last decade in the major magazines and mailed even more often to hotlists. The appeal is simple and to the point: This is hard-core...
Welcome to the club, Rob! If you have any questions or need help with anything, just post it here. Make sure to check out the swipe file letters under “John Carlton’s corner”. You will learn a lot and they are only posted for a few weeks.
Thank you Virginia. I’m very excited. I’ve been following John for a few years now and have decided to follow my passion for writing copy and forge a career as a writer.
Hey Rob! I grew up not far from you in Watervliet. Live on the West side of the state now in Monroe. Direct-response can be a lonely endeavor in these parts. Seems like anyone with a marketing opinion just doesn’t get it. Good seeing you.
