Looking for fellow Newbie Copywriters (or Generous Experienced ones) to create a mastermind and accountability group for us to encourage and motivate eachother. I think this is probably my dream career and I want to help others achieve their goals as well. What do yall think?

Hi, my name is Claudia, and along with my husband, run a solar sales company out of Las Vegas, Nevada. We just started our second year and are working on doing marketing internally, versus purchasing inconsistent quality type leads from other marketing companies. I’m looking for specific help in the solar industry, more specifically for the S…Read more

Hello! My name is Jonathon Harbeck. I’m a new member and I’m just diving into copywriting for the first time. Any tips for a copywriter trying to beef up my portfolio and get my first gig? Should I intern or start with a local company?

Hi Jonathon: The first thing I would do is finish the SWS Home Study Course. That will give you the info and confidence you need to succeed. The way you get your first client will depend a bit on your own personality and how you want to pursue your career.
If you are not the type to take orders from someone else I think you are better off…Read more

Hey @virginia-drew I really appreciate the feedback!
In response to your feedback I’d say, how am I supposed to do that? I spent my last dime on this copywriting course. I need to get clients and just need a little guidance.
I’m completely fine working for myself and by myself.
Right now I’m creating my own fake portfolio with examples of my wo…Read more -
Hi Jonathon: I think you answered your own question. If money is an issue, I don’t think you should limit yourself. Try approaching local businesses as well as networking online to see what opportunities are available. There are several copywriting groups on Facebook. You may be able to network there, too. If I were you I would get my name…Read more

I just went to FB and searched, and found some groups that are for copywriters looking for jobs. I went into one of them and they had jobs posted. That might be a good place to start. Just search for “copywriting groups” or “copywriting jobs” or just “copywriting”, and several will come up.

Wow @virginia you’ve gone above and beyond in providing valuable feedback and I’m definitely going to follow through with some of your suggestions! This is the start of something beautiful!

is it difficult to get information from the standard rate and data service these days…was this easier to do in the past…Gary Halbert mentioned it and John Carlton mentioned getting list information there…any suggestions. thanks

Hi Brian,
Back when Gary and John talked about SRDS, it was published in book form and available for free in public libraries in even mid-sized towns.
I’m all but certain that’s no longer the case. (Although I haven’t gone looking for about 10 years.)
The information that Gary and John most often talked about gleaning from the printed SRDS…Read more

Thanks Stan. It appears they want some company information even before you can go further on their site. How does an individual such as myself even sign up for that?

John Carlton’s Best Ads: A Really Long Letter To Every Bodybuilder Who Secretly Believes The Fat Cats Are Ripping Him Off
Here is that notoriously-long letter I wrote to the bodybuilding market a few years back. It's a trimmed-down version of the 23-page letter that originally went out - we condensed a bunch of the charts and whittled the thing down to a nice and tidy 16 pages....
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The 17th Version
This is one of the first letters I wrote for Gary Halbert. And it almost killed me. You see, I was already a hard worker. When I went solo as a freelance writer, I had one rule: Business before pleasure. I had spent my twenties being a...

I would request a hot seat. John and Stan can look over what you are doing and give you some ideas on how to move forward.
Specifically, what have you been doing in the past year to get customers? What are your competitors doing (the ones that are successful)?
Are you selling for a specific manufacturer? If so, do they have any marketing advice that they share with you? If not, where do you get the equipment that you sell?
Hi Virginia, I’ll submit the request. We act as a dealer for SunSolar Solutions out of Peoria, AZ. We are a sales organization, the main company handles the rest post sale. Their marketing advice is door knocking 🙂
I can’t believe that companies still tell people to knock on doors. I guess if you have the stomach for it, it will work, but I would never start knocking on strangers’ doors.
What have you done in the past year, and what are your competitors doing?
Hi Virginia, we purchased leads from other marketers. Which was a hit or miss, but definitely not sustainable.
