Set up a handshake deal with a recording studio to help them with their marketing (set up email autoresponder, lead magnet, increase traffic/SEO) in exchange for 10% of new business. The studio makes $30,000 a year and the guy could reasonably handle 5x more work. I’m looking at it as a learning experience with real money. Curious about your guy’s…Read more

That’s part of the reason I put together so many “Collected Letters And Ads” editions after 2002 — I’d found a stash of my ads, knew the universe was always conspiring to lose them forever, and got them published. First thought: Although some of my best arrangements were hand-shake deals, I don’t recommend them with anyone you do not already trust and know well. Even then, a simple contract or even a “letter of agreement” goes a long way when the money becomes an issue. Set up a specific payment schedule, say on the 5th of each month. Thanks John (Mr. Carlton, uh, sir?)… It’s with a friend who basically runs his own studio A to Z. We agreed to reevaluate after 2 months and could decide to keep working together or just calling it good.
