Hello all! I am new to copywriting. I don’t know the first thing about it, but I want to learn. Would love to know where to start. I want to write copy that sells so that I can make a minimum $100K/ year. Would love your input Mr. John Carlton if that is possible. Thank you.

Did an interesting critique of some copy in my Inner Circle group coaching session today.
It was from someone who wants to break into financial copywriting.
The copy was OK, but it reflected little if any knowledge of what’s working for financial publications today, what the top companies are doing, and what no longer works because it has become…Read more

Hey, everyone — David Deutsch here.
I hear this is becoming the place to be so I’ll be dropping by regularly to see what’s up.
I’m always interested to hear what is your biggest challenge to the success you seek as a copywriter or marketer.
And can someone tell me how to get to the place where I can put a bio and edit my photo, LOL.

John Carlton’s Best Ads: No-Rules Cage Fighter
My clients had roasted the self-defense magazines for years using what we called “down and dirty” print ads — no photos, no graphics, just 3 solid pages of hard-charging copy. Worked like gangbusters, hauling in cash by the barrel load. Then the competition started...

Felicia, you can’t go wrong starting by hand-copying great ads and promotions.
Read the classic books: Ogilvy, Caples, Hopkins, Schwab. Study the work of Halbert, Bencivenga, Makepeace.
If you don’t know who they all are — find out!
Be curious about persuasion and advertising — it’s all around you!
Study it. What do you respond to? What mak…Read more
Hi Felicia. A good, but complicated question. David’s answer is excellent.
I would add that getting into copywriting to “make $100,000 a year” is the wrong motivation. This is a difficult gig… despite the learning process being very simple once it’s laid out in steps (as we do in the Simple Writing System). The “hard” part is in applying what…Read more
