Hey Club,
I deeply love John Carlton’s style and I truly believe that when it comes to learning copy from him is like learning filmmaking straight from Steven Spielberg!
I’ve read many book about copywriting(well, actually just two and I bought the ones he has recommended so far)but this is way better!

Hey all!
I’m about 60% through the ‘Secrets of a marketing rebel’ course, and have completed the Pint of Beer Challenge (great stuff here, by the way… )
I’m slightly stuck and have borderline lost creativity AFTER my hook/lead… (basically a customer story intro that leads into some blurbs to help prospects identify with the pain points).…Read more

Hi Adam, Welcome!
You’re doing many things right, so let’s take a moment there.
Getting stories from customers is a great way to get specific about their problems (before) and how the product is helping.
All top copywriters have a step in which they let the ad go cold. That means you walk away from it for at least 2 days. Enough time so you’re…Read more

Hi Jahzel: I appreciate your enthusiasm, but you have to go through the lessons of the SWS in order. Since you just joined a few days ago, I am pretty sure that you haven’t done everything up to Lesson 10 (headlines).
At the least, go through the sections on bullets and headlines (and do the exercises). Also, make your headline the best you…Read more

John Carlton’s Best Ads: Butt-Ugly Golf
I've written something like 4,000 direct mail letters and direct response ads for golf products now. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. Sometimes, the best ads come from sheer desperation. I was hitting the very bottom of my bag of tricks last year,...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: Everything And The Kitchen Sink #2 – Entire Library Of Fighting Videos
There are two ads referenced in this commentary. Â This is the second one (last couple of paragraphs). Another Rodale piece-- this time, they got impatient selling individual books about the various parts of men's lives... and decided to just lump everything together...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The Financial Bloodbath Caused By Criminal Scum
Gary Halbert gets credit for the headline and concept on this one. I was working with him at the time, in the last days of the Reagan presidency, when the financial markets -- and especially the precious metals markets -- were causing investors migraines. Banks were...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The Nearly-Crippled Businessman
Here is an early self-defense letter, which struck a major nerve in the customer base for this market. It's run every year for the last decade in the major magazines and mailed even more often to hotlists. The appeal is simple and to the point: This is hard-core...
Jahzel, agreed… John is the best!
