Hi, I run a personal training business that caters to 40+ weight loss. I took the SWS course with an instructor (Mark L who was fabulous) and with tweaks here and there along the way developed a sales page that was converting well…I was happy with it.
I was using stock images for my slider and pictures of me and and one trainer for the…Read more

Hey! does anyone have a VA service they recommend or use themselves? They can be remote OR based in LA. I have had trouble finding one that is reliable and really good at what they do. Required skills; basic email communication, planning, and organizational skills, some design training, some social media experience (but willing to train)

Hi Ayries: I have hired several Filipino VAs for different reasons and use Onlinejobs.ph. I joined many years ago when it was a one-time fee. They have a lot of candidates but the main service is DIY. They verify the candidate’s ID and I think they have some tests for them but mostly it is left to you to screen them.
They do have a DFY…Read more

Howdy – my name is Kevin McCarty, new member to MRIC.
I work managing Facebook Ads and creating their landing pages. All industries.
Marketing Rebel was the first copywriting book I read and is still the go-to guide I use when I’m stuck.
I was recently fired from a job because my copy skills weren’t up to par, so here I am, trying to improve.…Read more

Hello! Glad to be here. I look forward to learning and meeting others who are honing their marketing skills.
I am currently working with a fitness business on adjusting their marketing to bring in more memberships to their subscription site (sleektechnique.com). We are working on their sales funnel at the moment and trying to simplify their…Read more-
Hi Dawn: I think you should apply for a hot seat and John and Stan will review this and give you some suggestions. There is a link in the right column. They will spend about 45 min with you and you will get some great input.
It is hard to comment without a lot more info, but usually a subscription model is not complicated. You have some type…Read more

Thanks for your response Virginia. I appreciate it. I have already started to fill in the application for the hot seat. Would love to get the additional feedback from John and Stan if they choose me.
-
Hi Dawn: did you submit the application? Just asking because I didn’t receive it and want to make sure some glitch hasn’t worked its way into the system. When you submit it you should receive an acknowledgement within a day (or so)

John Carlton’s Best Ads: Butt-Ugly Golf
I've written something like 4,000 direct mail letters and direct response ads for golf products now. Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. Sometimes, the best ads come from sheer desperation. I was hitting the very bottom of my bag of tricks last year,...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: Everything And The Kitchen Sink #2 – Entire Library Of Fighting Videos
There are two ads referenced in this commentary. This is the second one (last couple of paragraphs). Another Rodale piece-- this time, they got impatient selling individual books about the various parts of men's lives... and decided to just lump everything together...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The Financial Bloodbath Caused By Criminal Scum
Gary Halbert gets credit for the headline and concept on this one. I was working with him at the time, in the last days of the Reagan presidency, when the financial markets -- and especially the precious metals markets -- were causing investors migraines. Banks were...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The Nearly-Crippled Businessman
Here is an early self-defense letter, which struck a major nerve in the customer base for this market. It's run every year for the last decade in the major magazines and mailed even more often to hotlists. The appeal is simple and to the point: This is hard-core...

Hi Pete, thanks for the reply. The new pics have been up for 16 days. Its hard to say with visits as we did some heavy social sharing that I don’t usually do.
I had 1100 people visit within that time but a lot of them were friends and tire kickers so not accurate.
However my Adwords traffic which is targeted has been heavy so I know the…Read more
Thanks again Pete. Its hard to do split test. I get some people calling/some emailing/some through opt in form/some text. I know you can and should track the details but for me right now its too much. Plus i get traffic from a lot of other places for my blog and stuff that are not people even looking for training.
However I do know that my…Read more
Ok Thanks! I will play around with it and see maybe its just coincidence….
Hi Blaine. I’ve been on vacation, sorry for the late response…
Yes, split test. That’s the main key to making marketing work, especially if you’re baffled by results.
As for the professional-looking pics vs. home-grown shots… I always prefer the “dirtier” version myself. Throughout my career, I’ve often tried on purpose to make my letters,…Read more
No problem John and thanks for the thorough explanation.
It does make total sense to me the more I think about it. My dirtier version was definitely performing better and I changed it back after I read your response.
I believe the “just like me” and bonding is very important especially in personal training as you will be spending a lot of time…Read more
Yeah, billboard advertising is a little out of my wheelhouse. Gun to my head, I’d post a smiling pic of you, have one or two reasons to call (like a special deal), and a big phone number.
The classic rule for billboards is to keep it under 15 words, I think. People can’t digest anymore than that.
You really gotta have your biggest benefit here…Read more
Thanks John! I am doing both Adwords and FB ads right now. I just wanted to do it more for branding and public awareness.
Thanks so much for your input! I will use your advice for the billboard!
Agree with John about the dirtier pics. Your landing page is great, but even before reading this thread, I was put off by the professional shots. Something about that lady’s smile in the banner…..
I’ve done gym ads and we use dirty pictures every time. What John’s talking about is especially important on Facebook because it’s so easy to pick up…Read more
Thanks Kevin. When did you look at the site? I changed it back to the old version on Sun(noon) which was delivering better but still uses stock professional photos for the slider. Maybe ill remove the slider??
I looked at it this morning.
I see no tattoos except for the testimonials, so I thought it was the “new” one.
Thanks but I already changed it back to the old one. I’m thinking of getting rid of the slider all together….
