Hello All,
I joined The Clubhouse after purchasing David Deutsch’s course on Copythinking. I’m nervous to have made this decision but – I’m excited so here goes!My most pressing question at the moment is why the site wouldn’t accept my work email address, saying that it is already in use. That’s very strange as I’ve used the name for 7 or 8…Read more

Hello,
I’ve just The Clubhouse today, and I’ve been studying copywriting for about 25 years (for my own use) and am just now entering the workplace to try and get my first client by using UpWork.
Once I have a few clients under my belt, I’ll venture to more ways to get new clients…
I’ve been on an LOA at work for about 8 months and have only…Read more

Hi Nick: Welcome to the Club! I know that the Kickass Course will be very helpful. John has another course (the freelance course) which is not expensive and would also help you get clients. If you do order that, make sure you do not order the package, because that includes the Kickass Course that you already own.
And you might also check…Read more

Hi everyone, I just joined the club today. I am an aspiring entrepreneur focussing on digital marketing for now, but hoping to transition into UX design in the future.
I’m currently in the process of trying to acquire my first client through email marketing but Im struggling to get a good reply rate.

Hi Myles: What types of companies are you targeting, what services to you offer, and what are you saying in your email?
Where do the email addresses come from?
Welcome to the Club, and to the SWS Home Study Course!

Hi Virginia, I’m currently targeting contractors (remodelling contractors, HVAC Contractors, plumbers, etc ), and I’m offering Google Ads and SEO Services.
In my email I tell them I’m receiving an “influx of clients from their city but, I don’t work with any active clientele in their city … yet”, then I explain who I am and what I do.
I find…Read more

Hi Myles: You are going up against a couple of obstacles. First, they are probably receiving a lot of emails from marketers, so you have to make yourself stand out (assuming you can even get them to open the email). Also, if they do open your email, they have no idea who you are, so why should they listen to you?
One thing your competitors…Read more

Good Afternoon,
I’m helping a client of mine judge interest in a new idea they want to “test”…
Curious if you have any resources/tips for creating an LP with the goal of judging interest in a “coming soon” product/service?
Thanks!
Craig-
Hi Craig: I am not sure what you want to do with the landing page. Are you just going to ask peoples’ opinions? Are you going to give something away in order to get their opinions?
-
Hi Virginia – I’m going to have a short write-up teasing what we’re thinking about offering as a new service and then ask people to enter their email address to join the “waiting list” and be the first to get notified when the service becomes available.
Hope that makes sense and sorry for being so vague with my intial question.
Thanks!
Craig -
Hi Craig: It looks like you would have to have a regular landing page because you have to sell the service to have someone give you their contact info.
Stan answered a similar question a while ago. The original question was about getting someone to set up an appointment for a call, but you can modify it to sell a service instead of a call…Read more

John Carlton’s Best Ads: Hyper-Effective Cover Letters #1 — My All-Time Favorite Cover Letter
There are two keys to the following cover letter. First is the personalization in the subhead. That alone is a compelling way to engage the reader. Second, though, is a much more subtle tactic. It's disarming, clever, and hits directly at the...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: Short, Old-As-Dirt “Nice Guy” Finishes First
Let's count the ''tricks" I pulled out of my bag for this ad: A take-away superscript. (Gone in 11 days.) Instant urgency. Long headline. A compelling "not what you expected" type of headline. This is self-defense ...and yet we're talking about old short guys in the...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: We Screwed Up Big Time
Here is a good example of a "lipstick" letter. The reference is to the old comedy routine of coming home with lipstick on your collar -- and obviously dire situation that would crush a normal man. But a top – notch salesmen should be able to talk his way out of...
John Carlton’s Best Ads: The “Piss Everyone Off and Then Apologize” Letter
Here is the letter I mention in “Kick-Ass Copywriting Secrets” where the personalized headline enraged so many people. I was only trying for a “visceral” connection in the headline — you know, give people’s hot button about vulnerability a gentle rap. Get a reaction.
